Seniors Garret French and Riley Weaver have both been involved in FFA throughout high school.

French describes FFA as, “Groups of students and schools that join together to change everything about their environment.”

Weaver added, “You get to spend time with friends and meet new people and gain resources that will help you in the future. And you get to travel all over the place to district and area conventions and going to spend a week at the state convention.”

French shows animals in FFA such as heifers, steers, and pigs. He has been showing these animals in FFA for 12 years.

Weaver has been showing animals since her freshman year of high school, “Starting out with goats for three years, and a pig my sophomore year, then competing in the Houston Livestock Show Calf Scramble to jumpstart me into showing cattle.”

Since French has been showing these animals so long, he has some great and some not-so-great memories. One of his favorite memories always centered around the state convention.

Weaver’s favorite memories were, “Being able to go to all the District and Area conventions to hang out with friends, and traveling to all the majors shows that I show at and walking around the exhibition halls.”

Weaver plans on attending Abilene Christian University and mastering in Animal Science to become an Equine Rehabilitation Therapist.

French, on the other hand, “plans on keeping the herd he has now, raising and selling showing animals, and then hauling different places to go sell and make money off of them.”

HHS Agriculture teacher Jimmy Cox has been a huge asset to the FFA program.

Weaver states, “He has taught me valuable life lessons that I’ll never forget, how to communicate with others to work things out, as well as getting up to get things done with my animals, and pushing me to do better than just average.”

French also thought highly of Mr. Cox,” He has done a lot. He takes me to the majors which are Fort Worth and Houston for us. He is very helpful he tells us helpful tips on how to feed and wash and is a very good teacher.”

Cox also is very fond of French and Weaver, ”They have worked hard for FFA and they have served as officers for the last 3 years and have also shown a lot of livestock through FFA.  I hope they can gain some scholarships through the FFA program to help them further their education after they graduate from high school. They have definitely been an asset to the program.”
