One of 2018’s holiday movies is The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The Nutcracker has come in many forms throughout the years such as ballets, movies, books, and plays. The storyline stays mostly consistent through all the remakes, but the most recent one comes with a little twist.

The movie has most of the same characters as previous versions. Clara, the main character, is played by Mackenzie Foy. The young girl is in search of a magical key to unlock a box with a gift from her deceased mother. She is lead through a magical and mysterious world by Captain Phillip the Nutcracker, played by Jayden Fowora-Knight. After a long and challenging journey through the three realms, Clara and Captain Phillip must enter the fourth to retrieve the key and bring peace to the land.  After a turn of events, an unexpected character rises up to put the land under their control. Clara and Captain Phillip team up, gather their allies and come to the rescue.

This Disney-produced movie uses aesthetically pleasing visuals, such a magical land, unique characters, and a frequently changing scenery to draw the viewer in. The film starts off with a dramatic mood as Clara and her family mourn the death of their mother. It remains the same and lightens as Clara searches for her final Christmas present from her mother.

This drama/fantasy movie has several well-known actors such as Morgan Freeman who plays Drosselmeyer, who gives Clara the mysterious locked box. The well-known actress Keira Knightley plays the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Overall the movie is a great remake of the timeless story of The Nutcracker. I grew up watching Barbie in the Nutcracker movie and I’ve seen The Nutcracker play. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms brought back memories from my childhood and didn’t disappoint with its unique adaptations. Movie producers added a few changes to the plot that will leave you unexpecting to a familiar story.
