Senior Shelbi Hebert is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel as she prepares to graduate Harleton High School in five months.  Hebert is working on becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant along with taking dual credit classes and is ready to see what life after high school will bring.

“If I could describe myself in three words…I’d say I’m pretty rude..but I’m also pretty funny and smart, so I feel like that sort of makes up for that” Hebert states proudly.

At school, many people see Shelbi as the outgoing loudmouth who always has something to say. What they may not know about her is she has an ambitious side.

“There’s not really much time for fun hobbies or interests,” Herbert says “I mostly spend all my time working and finishing high school. College classes are also pretty stressful. I’ve got a lot on my plate and it’s pretty hard to balance that out.”

“I guess you could say I’m your typical teenager. School isn’t really my favorite, but I really do like print shop. It’s a way to show all your ideas and creativity. Being in high school, there’s not a lot of time for that. It’s all about staying in line. Print shop is sort of a way to color outside the lines if that makes sense.”

The very first thing Herbert does when she wakes up in the morning is check her phone and turn off her annoying alarm clock. When she gets to school, she just takes a moment to herself to sit in the parking lot and “people watch.”

“I don’t wanna sound like a creep,” Herbert laughs “People just amuse me in a way. I like to see my peers park terribly or maybe just be nosy and silently make fun of them. It’s sort of my self-pep talk for dealing with everyone.”

Herbert’s friends are what help her get through the school day.

“I hang out with only a select bunch of people – not because I’m judgmental, but because everyone else is. I mostly hang out with Jaycee Granbery. She’s like me in a lot of ways. We have the same sense of humor, so she’s easy to talk to. She also knows how to keep me in line.”

As a student, Shelbi tries to keep a carefree attitude about grades and class ranking, but that doesn’t stop her from maintaining straight A’s.

“The key is not to stress,” Herbert says “but also don’t just give up. If you wanna succeed, you’ve gotta at least try.””

While school is important, Herbert also tries to balance out work and family.

“I work a lot on the weekends. I work a lot with dogs. I clean them, feed them, take them on walks…it’s kind of tiring, but who could say no to dogs? When I’m off work, though, I try to spend as much time with my family as I can.”

Hebert cuddles with one of her customers at Doggie Doos and Stay Here Too.

“We usually go to dinner or go shopping – if there’s time. My family jokes a lot and we love laughing together. We’re all best friends, even when we’re fighting. That sounds cheesy, but it’s true. There’s not a lot of time to hang out with them anymore, but when there is, it’s a blast.”

“Being a teenager is tough,” Herbert says “But everyone has to do it. I just try to keep my head high and make it look easy.”
