Powerlifting has not been a consistent sport in Harleton, but this year’s powerlifting team is off to a great start.

Coach Todd Hammack said, “It’s been at least 5 years since we were able to have a team practice and compete.”

The boy’s team recently completed successfully in a meet with six out of the seven athletes finishing in the top 5 and Jadyn Salazar placing first by 5 pounds.

Sophomore Brody Kriegel is competing for the first time. When asked what sparked his interest Kriegel said, “My 20time project and I love to lift weights.”

As a freshman last year, Elizabeth Ward, English teacher, requires everyone to do a 20time project. It’s a year-long passion project that students create, set goals, and present a Ted Talk on what goals they reached by the end of the year.  The purpose of Kregel’s project was to motivate himself to work out and set goals. The project uncovered a new passion for Kriegel that encouraged him to later join the powerlifting team.

The girls will have their turn to compete in an upcoming meet. Junior Damara Williams said, “It’s my first one so I’m kind of nervous because I’ve been practicing for months now.”

William’s brother Luis is also a member of the boy’s team.  The sophomore was able to explain to his sister how the meet ran since they competed two days prior.   He said they usually squat, bench press, and then deadlift. The meets usually take all day because you have to wait for everyone’s score to come back.

Damara has confidence in her team, “ I actually do think our team is going to do pretty good. We’re not the greatest, but we are definitely going to go somewhere with it. My teammates have been working really hard and for their weight class they do pretty awesome.”

Coach Hammack explained a typical powerlifting practice, “We will work specific parts of the lifts like ‘just the pull on the deadlift’ or bottom outs on squat. We will also practice rapping knees and eventually lift in our suits. On a daily basis, they have 3 main lifts specific to bench, squat, or deadlift and I will have a couple of lifts to help round out the overall body.”

As long as the team keeps this motivation and confidence, they can go far.
