As the second semester of the 2018-2019 school year rolls around, the Harleton High School tennis players are getting ready to compete at their district tournament on March 25th in Hawkins.

Head Coach Kevin Jones said, “This is the most kids we’ve ever had play.  I’m looking forward to a great season.”

Coach Jones played tennis when he attended HHS. He qualified for the state tournament playing doubles in 1980, 1981, and 1982. Although he never placed first while at State, he and his partner made it to the semifinals one year.

“Just the realization that I had accomplished something that only eight other teams in the state did was pretty awesome. Having that state patch on my letter jacket didn’t stink either.”

Sophomore Ashanti Johnson is going to be playing for her second year on the court.

It is just a fun sport, you don’t have to have many skills or be coordinated to play. You can just play to have fun. It is a lot different from basketball because it is not a high-pressure sport,  but basketball is. It’s not a huge deal if I don’t win; I play for more of a stress relief. I also love how supportive Coach Jones and Mrs. Ward are.”

Assistant Coach Elizabeth Ward said, “These kids are fun to coach and to be around in general. Being coachable is probably the highest attribute an athlete can have in my book. We have a ton of kids new to tennis,  and they want to learn.”

Like Jones, Ward also competed in tennis in high school.  While she never advanced to State, she competed on Varsity four years and still plays with her family for fun when they have time. She’s excited about this year’s team and being in a more competitive district.

“We should have some kids advance this year if they work hard and practice consistently. Coach Jones is extremely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of tennis, and he has taught me several ways to better my skills.”

The team’s first matches will be held on February 28th, 2019 at home against East Texas Charter.
