Damara Williams is a cross country participant, ultimate power-lifter, mini Serena Williams, and track star shares her experience as being a multiple sports athlete in a small school. Being an athlete in a 2A school district, you have to spread yourself out in more ways than one and during that process, many challenges can arise. When asked about the challenges that she faces on a daily basis in her activities and how they affect her, Damara states,

“Time, a lot of time is devoted to the sports that I do. Sometimes I feel like I’m not good enough at one sport and I focus myself on another sport when I should be spreading myself out, and that just creates a lot of energy that I don’t have. Physically — my body gets ruined in ways that like right now, my I.T. band is torn in my leg, so my body hurts physically all of the time and I’m always sore. Mentally — like with power-lifting, your body has to be at a certain weight so you’re constantly thinking about what you’re putting in your body and that is really stressful.”

Participating in many sports has been more of a help than a hindrance, all in all. When talking about her life, Damara mentions that most times you hear of high school students partying, drinking, and getting in trouble; however, being an athlete has helped her resist temptation and keep her head on the right track.

As a junior, Damara has only one more year to seriously make decisions about her future.

“If I get the chance to get a cross country scholarship from the University of Texas, I’ll take it. If I had the opportunity to choose a scholarship for any of the sports that I do, it would most likely be power-lifting.”

When asked what drives her to compete in everything that she does, all answers pointed back to Jesus. She continued to explain that without lots of prayers, she would not be able to have the strength that she does in competing on such high levels.

This year, Harleton High School has developed its first ever power-lifting team, and Damara has excelled greatly in the process. After advancing to Regionals a couple of weeks ago, she ran around frantically trying to maintain her weight class and get prepared for the regional meet. She ended up getting 2nd place, allowing her to advance to the state power-lifting meet.

“My goals and expectations going into state are to not beat myself up a lot, because I expect myself to do and be the best, and I tend to beat myself up by doing so. So I just wanna set low expectations not to hurt myself, but I feel like everyone is expecting me to be the best, so that’s where the hard part is. But to achieve those goals, I have to train my  body and my mind, because your body cannot function without your mind being there.”

As Damara travels to state on March 14-15th, make sure to wish her good luck as she represents Harleton in such an incredible way.
